Books Rock Radio Station with Nicky Wells

Top author and radio presenter, Nicky Wells stops by FFP HQ to talk to Pauline Barclay about her fabulous new enterprise, her very own Radio show. Nicky, there's champagne to celebrate this occasion, so please take this glass and then take it away…….

Thanks, I love this stuff! So, you want to talk about BOOKS ROCK, my brand new radio show. I’m honoured and flattered, really! I didn’t expect such a big reaction to my humble endeavours. Fire away, fire away

What made you start up your radio show?

Oh gosh. You’re not going to believe this. I had a dream. Uh-huh. I dreamed the whole thing one night, title of show, schedule, music, guests and all. I think it arose from a combination of things, this dream. One is having been involved in various radio shows on a regular basis for almost eighteen months and loving every minute of it. Another one is being an author who knows how valuable a radio appearance can be to publicity. Moreover, I happen to love reading and I wanted to offer a show where readers get a voice too. And last… hey, I get to play my favourite songs on the radio!
So I fired off an email to the station producer, prayed, and got an answer back within three hours. It’s a go, let’s talk.

Whow, that sounds amazing. What can listeners expect from you?

From me, personally? Lots of laughs. As in, I laugh a lot on air. I don’t know why, I can’t help it. It’s probably the adrenaline! Apart from that, there’ll be book talk, lots of it. And loads of guests, two. As the show runs for an hour at this time, I plan to have two authors on every feature. These could be authors from any genre, although at the moment, we’re a little romance heavy—just by virtue of what I read, write, and who I know. But I have emails out to some big names in crime, thriller and children’s books, so wish me luck!

I’m also featuring two readers in every show. They happen to be book bloggers, but running a book blog is not a requirement. Watch this space! Anyway, my ‘readers’ talk about their blogging experience (if relevant) and offer up their top reads for the month. Again, any genre goes!
Last but not least, I have a ‘reality radio’ segment whereby I’m following the progress of one aspiring Lincoln writer from idea to plan to finished manuscript and publication. Her name is Karina Jackson, she’s a mum of three kids, a hairdresser by day and author by night, and her passion and enthusiasm are mind blowing. Big Brother, eat your heart out!

That is amazing, so how can listeners tune in?

BOOKS ROCK! goes out at 11 am UK time on every third Saturday of the month for the time being. It’s broadcast live via 107.3FM, but our listeners are literally around the world, so most of them tune in ‘online via the ‘Listen Live’ button at Also there are podcasts available for every show, and you can listen to the very first edition (featuring Jill Mansell, Talli Roland, Kim Nash, JB Johnston and Karina Jackson) right here:

What are your plans for the future?

Apart from world domination, a daily national radio show, a weekly TV slot and a bestselling novel or three? LOL! You did ask!

But seriously—plans for the future? I would love to make BOOKS ROCK into a huge success and increase both the frequency and length of the programme (if I can find the time!). I’m still writing books and will grow my catalogue by at least one, maybe two books, year on year. Apart from that, I’m hoping for health and happiness and watching my young family grow up.

Tell us a little about you?

*Nicky mutters under her breath as she blushes* Oh gosh, now she wants to know about me! *Clears throat and speaks normally, if with a slightly squeaky voice* You want to know about me? Okay. Right. So.

I have an incurable ‘thing’ for rock musicians. I can’t help it. They just ‘do it’ for me. Red rag to a bull is nothing like a rock star is to Nicky Wells! That’s why I write the books I do, and that’s why ‘rock’ features even in the title of my radio show. Particular faves include Jon Bon Jovi and Joey Tempest. I’ve recently discovered Myles Kennedy too! Bad boys and golden voices, tough men with long hair and soft hearts…. *Nicky swoons*

When I’m not lusting after rock stars, presenting radio shows, or writing books about young women who lust after rock stars, I’m a wife, a mother of two boys, a lobster eater and pizza lover, a trained teaching assistant, and an occasional knitter. I have been known to cook and bake, but I’m so absent-minded these days, I’m liable to put the fish sauce in the cookies and the vanilla essence in the beef pie. So you probably don’t want to sample my cooking right at this moment…LOL!

There. I think that’s probably enough about me!

Pauline thanks so much for having me, I had the most splendiferous time. I think…oh go on then, I’ll just have one more of those large glasses of bubbly, just as long as I can crash on your couch… J

Nicky, thank you for a fabulous interview, it's been wonderful having you here at FFP HQ, sorry it was not round the pool this time, but I promise, next time will be!

  1. Hi Nicky. I really enjoyed the interview. Having met you and seen that sunny smile in real life, I can imagine you laughing (because you're having fun) on radio. To date, I've only interviewed bands and singer-songwriters, but after reading this FAB post, I'm going to push to interview a novelist in the autumn. From one radio presenter to another, Radio Rocks!

  2. Hi Madalyn, it's so lovely to hear from you and right backatya regarding that sunny smile!! Radio certainly rocks! XX

  3. Great interview, Nicky! I, too, have seen that sunny smile in real life. Congrats on your radio show and I hope it continues to do well to the point that they won't be able to refuse you when you suggest longer air-time per show, and more shows. Yay!!!
